A character in a story I'm writing is looking at making a career change,
possibly to accounting. She happens to live in Austin, and I know that UT's
accounting program is very well-regarded, so I'd like get your input on
whether she'd be competitive to get in.
Some background on my character: she's a high school teacher with a BS in
math from a small liberal arts college. She has a 3.8 GPA and should be able
to get at least a 700 on the GMAT (for the record, I'm not pulling this figure
out of thin air. I got a 690 on the GMAT some years ago, and my degree is in
music history). She should be able to get good recommendation letters from
the principal she works for and a couple of her undergrad professors.
I would guess that some of the biggest weaknesses in her application would
be: 1) her undergrad school isn't well-known, and 2) she has no real
corporate experience (the teaching job is the only one she's had). Would
these be really big disadvantages?
Assuming she's able to get the pre-application requirements knocked out,
what do you think of her chances at UT? If not there, what about SMU?
