Hi lifegoeson,

It might be hard for you to get an H1b visa as an
accountant. Most companies here require US work experience
and the economy here is not as good as before. It will be
expensive for them to sponsor a foreigner and just make
more sense if they hire one locally. You can go to the
topic Career Questions,Advice and Job Search on this forum
and you will read people who passed the CPA exams and are
still unemployed.

@lifegoeson:

i second racquel1208 on her stand.  taking the us cpa for H1b1 visa is a long shot.  I became a cpa in the PI in 1994 and got here in the US (FL) on 2006 through an immigrant visa (as a dependent-wifey is RN).  I was lucky i got hired as staff accountant without them asking me 4 a local experience and license.  Im in TX right now and am trying to get a shot at the us cpa beast.  scheduled for bec this coming feb under CA board.  you are right though, it could probably give u an edge since hiring managers would rather hire whites than browns (yes, there is discrimination . . . ) but having a license is an entirely different ballgame (but this is only if you're already here though).  Passing the cpa exam here does not earn u a license (unlike in PI), u still have to apply for a license which is roughly around another two years for one to qualify by working under the supervision of a cpa (different per state).

I decided to settle in PH, that's why. I am a CPA-lawyer and I also have good
opportunities here. My hubby is also a US CPA (he also took the exam on a
tourist visa) although he works in Cayman Islands. We figured that it wont
be healthy for our growing family if I also work abroad. Here I could afford 3
helpers but if we settle in the US we will be on our own.... But who knows,
maybe in the future my US CPA would come handy (although I am foregoing
with my original plan of taking the California Bar, it again may be a waste of
time...)
