Hello,

I appreciate any help with this.  I am currently considering enrolling in the CPA program.  Currently have a bachelor's in finance, so that will cover the 150 hours and the 24 hours of business credit.  I only had 4 classes in accounting while in undergrad, so at most that is only 16 of the 24 credits required.  Do they count any finance classes toward the accounting credit?  I currently hold the CFA designation, will any of that be counted toward the accounting credit?  Do any of you know where I can get the required accounting credit remainder at the quickest and cheapest cost, and preferably study from home.

Greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks

My recommendation would be to take the classes online through a community college. You can save hundreds of dollars on each class going through a community college rather than a larger university.

Email your state board and make sure the class will be approved before you spend the time and money on it.

Make sure those accounting courses are Upper division course. If its Principles of Accounting/Managerial Accounting courses, they will NOT be counted. Also, courses from community college is not accepted. You may need Intermediate Accounting, Cost Accounting, Taxation, AIS, Business Law, Advanced Accounting, etc. and they must be taken at any four-year college.

For the upper level accounting courses you need to sit for the exam, it's best not to try and take the easy way out and get these from the same 4-year college you received your degree through if at all possible. If not, as txcpacandidate said, you may want to check with whichever state board you are applying under to see if the school you're looking at qualifies.

However, when it comes time to satisfy the 150-hour requirement for licensure, you can pretty much gather up those credits from any accredited institution (like community college) for just about any subject (even basket-weaving or physical fitness classes!).

From TX Board:

Board Rule 511.58(a) states: An individual who holds a baccalaureate degree from a recognized educational institution may enter into a course of study at an accredited community college, provided that the accounting program offered at the community college was reviewed and accepted by the board.
