1.  Life as you knew it has ended.  You have no friends or family any more except your CPA exam instructors.  Your will read no newspapers or books, nor watch TV, because you will look only at CPA exam review materials.  Your home will accumulate clutter and dust, but you will not even notice because you will be completely focused on mastering fixed and variable cost overhead variances.  The dog will get accustomed to having daily walks with someone else, because you no longer have time to walk him.  You WILL spend Sunday mornings with your spouse and kids just to remind them you still exist, and yes, half of that Sunday morning "family time" will be in church (you're going to need all the divine assistance you can get).

2.  All social engagements are hereby cancelled.  You will not see any more new-release movies until after they have come out on DVD.  Friday night "Happy Hour" will go on without you.  You will get rid of any friends who are not "self-entertaining."  The only reason you now have for going out to dinner is to get a change of scenery for your studying, and yes, "dinner out" will be at the all-night diner where you will bring your books because you are trying to master pension funding.

3.  If you do it right, all of the above will be only temporary.  You should be able to emerge from the back of your cave with a Congratulations Letter in 9 to 12 months.  If you do DON'T do all of the above you will spend three years trying to pass, and pay lots and lots of money for updating review materials and applying to re-take failed exams.

I hope you don't think I'm kidding.  Anyone who has actually passed can tell you I am 100% serious!!!

I can confirm all of the above. In fact, three years is being a bit generous - I know exam candidates who have been trying to pass this thing since before it was computerized (so that would be 5+ years) and EVERY SINGLE TIME when I ask them what has stood in the way of their success I get the same answer "Oh, well, I got really busy and didn't have time to study"

It only takes a little bit of economics to understand "opportunity cost" - so what do candidates give up by telling their friends "sorry, I can't go out?" Well if your "friends" don't understand the dedication required to achieve this career goal, you probably don't want them as "friends" anyway. So you skip a few happy hours. And? Tell them they owe you one heck of a happy hour extravaganza once you pass the CPA exam.

How many thousands of $$ do CPA exam candidates end up throwing away in failed exam fees simply because they couldn't say no to their "friends"? Your friends aren't going to write a check to NASBA for you to retake the exam, are they?

Trust us, your life will be there waiting when you are done. There is no way you can "halfway" study for the CPA exam.

As Nan said "If you do it right, all of the above will be only temporary"

We promise you!!

Oh and add to that I've found that candidates do well when they write out an entire schedule for the week - I mean you've got to account for EVERY single hour. Don't just say "I'll study after work" because that never happens. The TV remote is too tempting and all the sudden it's 10p and you're snoozing on the couch.

Set a schedule to wake up one hour earlier before work and do some multiple choice. Terrible, I know, but after 3 weeks, the extra hour will become routine.

Plot out your ENTIRE week, hour by hour, with work and study time allocated appropriately. When you do it this way, you'll see just how much free time you have where you didn't think you had any.

Good luck!

I learned all of the above the hard way meaning I spend over two years on and off studying and wasting money on review programs (by letting Becker expire), and fees (scheduling and rescheduling) so yea it does add up. Finally I decided to "do it once, do it right and get it over with" so I am looking for some practical advise on daily schedules. I work full-time and have a boyfriend which is worse then having a pet!
