I am working for a CPA firm as a bookeeper - recently changed careers.  Graduated with a Bachelors in Finance with a minor in Accounting 20+ years ago.  Am really giving sitting for the CPA some serious thought as the owner of this firm is training me and I am two classes from having everything I need to sit for the exam (although- it is important to note that I will need a "huge" review course as I am 45 and college graduation was a very long time ago).    I wonder what people who are actively involved in sitting for the CPA; working in accounting positions think of this proposition given my age; lack of work experience; and years away from college???!  I have the time to devote to studying as I only work part time.  Is it a pipe dream to think in 2 to 3 years I could be in a position to sit for the CPA - given a lot of hard work and prep (along with continuing OTJ experience)?

I don't think it is a stretch. Your age, work experience, and years away from college will not prevent you from passing the CPA exam. Go for it.

I'm planning to take the first section in Feb.  2010. When is the best time to apply and pay the fee? When does the 9 months be triggered? (it says: Once the fees are paid you'll have a period of 9 month in which to sit for the sections you selected.) If I apply now, will the 9 month start earlier than Feb.?

The nine months start from the date your fees are paid. For example, if you pay your exam fees on 10/01/2009, you have until 7/01/2010 to sit for the sections that you paid.

So the fee means examination fee not the application fee. Thank you so much, onlyregleft.
I'm requesting transcripts from schools now, do I summit the application at the same time or I need to wait until all the transcript are sent to CSBA? I heard that the application process would take an average of 8 weeks, it might be better to apply early?
