Hi,
Passed the exam, satisfied the experience requirement, and waiting for everything back from board.  Trying to figure out how much effort/money is required to keep up CPE.  I'm in Ohio and required to take 120 hours every 3 years.

The AICPA offers CPExpress, which is a subscription that allows unlimited online access to CPE for one fee.  The fee is $180 a year plus your AICPA membership, which is about $200 a year depending on your level (I assume you are staff).  Or, if you don't want to join the AICPA, it costs $435 for non-members.  Even the higher price is a steal for unlimited CPE.

You might be able to get your employer to pay for it too =).  Doesn't hurt to ask!

Thanks so much!  I'm actually working in corporate accounting for a closely-held company, so I'm not required to be licensed - I could just go inactive.  (My boss and CFO are both inactive.)  Since I don't have to have the license I doubt employer would pay for it.

That does sound like a great deal!!

If your boss in inactive, I hope the Ohio board accepts your experience.  Usually the experience has to be certified by an active CPA.

If you go inactive, then no need for the CPE, so no need to have the employer pay for it.  However, make sure you check with the Ohio board about inactive status though.  In NY if you are practicing while inactive (even if not using the CPA designation after your name), you could be subject to hefty fines.  At least in NY, practicing includes corporate accounting.

However, after working so hard to get this thing done, especially with the scores you got, I wouldn't just go inactive.  $400 a year isn't that much to keep up the license, and many of the seminars are really good and could help out your company (and make you look good for bringing up the ideas).  All the seminars are either 1 or 2 hours, they will fly by if you don't do them all at once.

Thanks.  I know NY is more strict on the experience requirement (went to college in NY so I've heard a lot about the NY requirements).  In Ohio an inactive CPA can sign off on experience.  (In fact, I've been notified by the board that they have approved everything and will be mailing certification in a couple weeks!)

That is interesting that practicing includes corporate accounting in NY.  I think I am OK for Ohio but I will need to read up on that more to make sure I am following the rules...
