I used to be very confused about this section as well. My feeling is we have to understand how discount, premium are amortized and how carrying value is related to them. When you do problems, always keep this in mind that the amortization evnetually will lead the carrying value to its face value. Having this in your mind, it will be easier to have a clear mind in solving those problems. I hope I have made myself clear.

Two things: Journal Entries and Amortization Schedule.
If you are given a two part question, you can almost always answer both questions at once if you take the above approaches. So, learn how to prepare the journal entries and the amortization schedule.
