Hi all

I am new here. I am on H4. I am living in bayarea(Fremont) in CA. I want to apply for CPA exam but I have some confusion about CPA exam. I have M.COM. degree from Gujarat University in India. B.COM. + M.COM.(external)

I have already done my evaluation(Subject analysis) from ECE. They are give me 158.50 semester hour.

Summary:
  • Accounting(63.50)
  • Electives in Business(29.50)
  • Business Finance(8.00)
  • Business Law(4.50)
  • Economics(9.00)
  • Liberal Art Subjects(44.00)
  • other subjects(0.00)
So, any body let me know about can I eligible for CPA exam and for which state?

If Possible first I prefer in NJ state. But I don't now what will happen?

Please guide me. Help me.

deecee, did you receive either your B.Com or M.Com after July 1 2001? If so, it looks like you qualify to sit for the exam in NJ (based on the information you have provided). The requirements are generally that you need a bachelors degree or higher (which you have); a minimum of either 24 or 30 semester hours of accounting (depending on the level of accreditation that Gujarat University has) which needs to include classes in financial accounting, management accounting, auditing and taxation; and at least 24 semester hours in business courses (which you have).

Additionally, NJ does not have a residency requirement for its exam applicants, so you may continue to reside in California while you complete the exam (and you may also take the exam at a California testing center, even as a candidate of New Jersey).

If you graduated with both your bachelors and masters prior to July 1 2001, the requirements are a little different. If this is the case, you may be a little short in the liberal arts semester hour requirements to sit the exam.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
Many Many thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it. This info is really help full to me. I did my bachelor and master after 2001 (B.Com-2002, M.com-2004).

One more question, ECE send me this below info.

According to ECE records, the New Jersey CPA has the following credit
requirements:
Liberal Arts subjects [LA]  60 credits
Electives in Business [BE]  18 credits
      Accounting [AC]  24 credits
      Business Law [BL] 6 credits
      Economics [EC]  6 credits
      Business Finance [BF]  6 credits
According to my revised evaluation report, I have the following US
equivalent credits in each category:
      Accounting  63.50 credits
      Electives in Business  29.50 credits
      Business Finance  8.00 credits
      Business Law  4.50 credits
      Economics  9.00 credits
      Liberal Arts subjects  44.00 credits

So now in subjects "Liberal Arts subjects" and "Business Law" I have lower than their requirement.  So is it effect to reject my application to NJ Board ?
Thanks again.

ECE have provided you with information about just one of the options available to qualify for the NJ exam. In fact, NJ has four other options under which you may qualify - none of which have minimum credit hour requirements for business law or liberal arts.

To see what I mean, you should download the NJ First Time Application form from NASBA (the agency which will process your application to sit the exam) located here, and scroll down to Page 2. Under the heading 'Eligibility for Examination' there are three bullet points, the third of which begins "Candidates who have graduated, prior to July 1, 2001...". That paragraph then goes on to list the requirements that ECE gave you. It also only applies to people who graduated before July 1, 2001, so I think that ECE gave you outdated information.

Below that, there is a list of 4 alternative entry options which apply to candidates who graduated after July 1 2001. Based on the information you've provided, you will most likely qualify for either Option 3 or 4 (depending on the equivalent levels of accreditation that Gujarat and your masters university are given by the Board). You will see that neither option 3 nor 4 list minimum requirements for liberal arts or business law hours. In short, they require a completed bachelors degree or higher, at least 24 credits in accounting and at least 24 credits in business courses, all of which you have. I've copied and pasted the full text of these requirements below:

3. Earned a baccalaureate degree from a business school or college of business which has been granted level two accreditation by AACSB, ACBSP or any other national accreditation agency recognized by the Board, and completed the following:
i. At least 24 semester hours in accounting at the undergraduate level or the graduate level, which included coursework in financial accounting, auditing, taxation and management accounting; and
ii. At least 24 semester hours in business courses (other than accounting courses) at the undergraduate level.

4. Earned a baccalaureate or higher degree from an educational institution which has been granted level one accreditation from the Middle States Association, Commission on Higher Education or any other regional accrediting agency recognized by the Board. The applicant shall complete the following:
i. At least 30 semester hours in accounting, which included coursework in financial accounting, auditing, taxation and management accounting; and
ii. At least 24 semester hours in business courses (other than accounting courses) at the graduate or undergraduate level.

NASBA is the organisation that will process your application to sit the NJ exam, so ultimately you will rely on the information that they provide and not ECE's information. Hope this helps!
