So I took the exam on May 25th and have since started to restudy for
FAR(which I failed in October with a 74). Then today I get my REG results(I
live in Oregon aka Snail mail...dont even get me started on that BS)...and I
failed with a 71.

I am seriously starting to want to quit these stupid exams...I got hired by
an accounting firm in February which has taken alot of pressure off of me
to pass them which helps...but my wife and I have a newborn baby(4
months old) and I wish I was just done with these exams so I could have
more time to play with my son...but it seems like the end is nowhere in
sight(I only have BEC out of the way, it expires 5/24/12)

The more I fail these exams the more I am starting to realize how much of
a money making machine the exam process is for everyone
involved(NASBA/state boards, etc). If they fail over 50% of the candidates
then they will have a constant money stream with people having to retake
each window.

I got the following results back:
Ethics & Legal Responsibilities(15-19%) = Stronger
Business Law(17-21%) = Stronger
Federal Tax Process(11-15%) = Weaker
Taxation on Property Transactions(12-16%) = Weaker
Taxation on Individuals(13-19%) = Comparable
Taxation on Entities(18-24%) = Stronger

Sims = Weaker

I must have REALLY blown the simulations...it might have been the fact
that I had two tabs on Installment sales and how to classify the gains and
losses on the installments between the various property sections. I think
which had about a page of coverage in the study materials(Roger Cram
and CPA Excel).

I always love it when i get hit with sims that my study materials dont help
me with effectively.

This whole thing has gotten me really down...I feel like I am going to
spend the rest of my life trying to pass these stupid exams.

Being a CPA has nothing to do with your performance in an accounting
firm...it has everything to do with your ability to take a test. And in my
opinion...that isn't the way it should be

Sorry to ramble on but I feel so depressed by this result that I have to vent

I doubt the Sims are the issue. When I took my AUD exam, I knew I rocked the multiple choice questions, but bombed the Sims. I got an 87. So, if you do well on multiple choice and do half-decent on the Sims, you should get a good score.

My advice will be to ignore those results. They mean nothing, they're vague and they have not helped me one bit in the past. Just go over all the material again, find out what areas you're struggling the most, and try to improve your knowledge in those areas.

You can do it. Just study again and while you go over the topics again, you'll start discovering your weak areas. Good Luck!

BTW- How did you get your results? In the mail? If so, when did you get it? I have yet to receive my scores in the mail from the last window.

My advice is continue on your way.........

You are too close to quit and believe me, if you do quit, you'll  regret it.  Think that what you are doing is not just for your benefit, but also for your family's financial future and other opportunies that will come your way.  What are you going to tell your kids when their older......that this was too much for you to handle??.  Come on.

This test doesn't make you smarter than the guy next to your, or make you a better accountant. It just opens the possiblity of having other opportunities to succeed if you didn't have it.

Success is not measured where you start, but it is measured where you finish.

Keep chipping away......you will pass.    Good luck, one test at time.

Well put, Ozzman!

When I went on my hiatus last year, I originally wanted to give up because hey, I got a job and I get to spend time partying with friends rather than wasting time studying for these exams. I was like, life's too short. Let me enjoy it. It was fun, no question about it. But I always get these thoughts that tell me, yeah, I'm having fun partying with friends. I can party all I want, but that won't put food on the table nor will it accomplish anything that will make me proud of myself. Also, yeah, I have a job. But 10 years from now, will I move ahead on that job? How much more will I make 10 years from now? If I don't go for that CPA, I can't see myself moving ahead and making better money. And worse of all, I have nothing to be proud of. Once I pass all 4 parts of the CPA exam, I can live the rest of my life knowing that I was able to accomplish something that a lot of people weren't able to accomplish. That will not only make me proud of myself, but it will turn me into a more confident person. I know it will change my life.

REG is hard, so I feel the pain. But I'm going to study hard and tackle this beast even if it kills me.

Work hard at it. Just think, if you pass all 4 parts, you're DONE and will never have to think about these exams again. Just 4 tests to pass and you'll get your life back. Sacrifice several months of your life to pass your remaining sections.

I try to look on the bright side, if I study extremely hard these next 4 months, I'm done with these tests forever!! Just 4 more months of dedicated studying and my life is back. Try to look at it that way. Passing these exams is hard work, but the hard work you're putting in will only be temporary. You'll have plenty of time to enjoy life after you pass. So, work at it and you'll pass.

Best of luck to you!

BTW- If I'm not mistaken, I believe your remaining sections are FAR, REG and AUD. I recommend that you study 3 months for FAR, 3 months for REG, and 2 months for AUD. Put in no less than 20 hours a week. Put in 9 months of hard work and you'll pass and be done!
