Often times we are so caught up in just wanting to pass the exam, which we should, but the dominant fact is, we should know this stuff in and out to be better accountants.

I had a good professor in college and have done well in my accounting courses, but it is the preparation of the CPA exam that is the ultimate teacher.

The CPA exam, especially FAR has really help with improving my critically thinking and knowing the theory in and out.

BEC is another exam we have to be grateful for, if you learn this stuff well, along with FAR you are on your way to being a great accountant, not just a CPA.

I am in the field and I can tell you as a consultant I come across some very difficult real world problems, these problems mimic some of the CPA questions, I guess they are written by experience CPA, the journey to passing this exam has help to hone me in the real world.

Be gracious as you prepare and gratified when you passed, both should be rewarding.

My thoughts

I understand where you coming from. Sorry for being cynical, but half this stuff I never use and never will use(Especially BEC). It's good when someone asks you a question and your able to answer it. But most of this stuff you can research and look up. I feel more knowledgeable, but don't feel like I can necessarily do my job any more effectively. I believe that experience is just as important as knowledge. I've met plenty of good accountants who have never sat for the CPA exam. It's only about perception. The outside world believes that you are better suited to perform an engagement verus someone who doesn't have a CPA.

If you don't use it, then you lose it. I guarantee in a month, half of this stuff I will completely forget. Some of these genius's fresh out of school can study this stuff for a week and score above a 90. I bust my butt for weeks and pray to get a 75. I don't believe that makes them a better accountant, just because they can pass an exam.

The AICPA is in the business of making us suffer. Is it really necessary to wait this long for a computerized exam score. Is it necessary to charge so much for exam fees and make me wait 10 weeks or more for a score. I'm mos def caught up in passing at this point. I like many others have the grueling task of taking this exam while also working an equally grueling tax season. I believe we should be allowed more than 18 months to pass the exam. It's very hard to take an exam during Jan/Feb/April. Many have done it, but it's hard as hell. This is a very imperfect exam.

I appreciate your postive spirits and wish I could feel the same as you.

I'm kind of looking at it from the angle that the CPA exam scares a lot of people away and makes the field that much more prestigious (I.E. Higher Compensation).  Since I am willing to submit myself to this exam I feel that I will be worlds ahead of some of my pears that simply just want to get a degree and a job, than float through life.  Especially when some of those people are a lot more intelligent than me.

Motivation and Drive is everything in this field, especially when you are just starting out.
