Kinda concerned here and Nasba website isn't much help (going to call tonight I think) but I will ask here first...as for the work experience requirement (OH license)...work experience has to be in public accounting correct?  I'm not sure if my current job would be classified as public accounting or not (we are publicly traded in London, not in the US)...my real question however, once I pass all four parts of the CPA exam - if I have no actual public accounting experience, do I risk losing my exam credit?  Does the 18 month window to pass also require the work experience?  Getting a little concerned here that I am going to pass the exam and lose all credit if I don't have the work experience...can anyone direct me to a site that would better clear this up or fill me in on this situation?

I am in a similar situation. I also need to know if you dont work in public acc experience , would that cause our credits to expire. I m from NH and their state req is also pub acc...Any how I emailed my State co-ordinator but havent received any reply yet. I will call the state board directly today I guess and find out about it. Please do le me know what they have tosay incase you are able to get that information.

I cannot speak for other states but in South Carolina the work requirement can be fulfilled in several different ways.

1. 2,000 hours with a public accounting firm (but not less than one year because they don't count all of the overtime that you work in public accounting).  The reason that most people assume that you have to have public experience is that most large firms require a person to be a CPA before being promoted to manager.  As such, you are working directly under a CPA.

2. 2,000 hours working under a CPA (can be full or part-time).  They prefer that it be your direct supervisor but as long as it is someone who reviews your work you are OK.

3. 5 years of teaching experience with a accredited college or university.  Courses taught must be accounting related.

As for losing your exam credit that depends on the state where you live.  Some states expire in as little as five years and others do not expire at all.

You should be able to get the answers to your questions by calling your state licensing board.  You can try NASBA but they will probably refer you to your state board.

I emailed the accountacy board for Ohio and got the following response:

"There is no time limit after successfully passing the exam to get your experience requirement…."

I assume that means I am good to go and don't have to run out and find that experience ASAP.  Not sure if this applies to your state, I suggest emailing your respective accountacy board.
