Be careful...My dad knows someone who went this route (state auditor) and is miserable. Why not look for a federal job? State earnings will be limited/capped. Federal offers more transferability, and options down the line.

mcollerd, you can be miserable anywhere. :-)
I work for the feds right now, and I love people here and the job as an auditor is great. There are no moral sacrifices (since there are no profits involved, nobody pushes you to do the job faster, etc.), good benefits (though, I heard they are worse than ones for the State employees), 37.5 hour work week. If you stay at work even 1 extra hour, you can take this hour off later. Nope, I am definitely not leaving this job unless I am forced to. :-)

Hi, bubzeebub, it's in NY. Thanks, Lelik. Mcollerd, could you please clarify in what sense state positions are "miserable"? Will be much obligated to you, if you deliver your expert opinion on "miserabilness".

Hasan11372, I know what "miserable" in this case is. As everywhere, the environment and the colleagues can be a little bit unpleasant. In the government, it's much more difficult to get promotions (more so if you work for a State) because it's pretty often based on the seniority and not any actual achievements. Administrative stuff kills sometimes. If you want to get something "right now", you probably will not. :-) A lot of stuff is pretty slow. If you are very energetic, it might be not a right job for you. :-) Compliance is often more important than any initiative. But! A lot depends on your manager and your team.
