Hey Sanjuro,
How's your job hunting coming along? I have just started mine a few weeks ago without any responses. My situation is a bit more challenging since I do not have a degree in Accounting. I went to a staffing agency yesterday and did some testing, interviewing, etc.. Well! I am not sure how that's going to pan out. Would appreciate it if you could share your experience. Thanks.

Well, I'm not further along than you, citizencpa.  I'm still unemployed and have yet to hear back from those firms I applied to online.  I wasn't an accounting major as well (my college does not offer a major in accounting, only a minor), but I did take most of my accounting classes in college.  I did hear back from firms I met at the Meet the Firms event.

An E&Y manager I spoke to at the event forwarded my resume to a recruiter.  The recruiter responded with (of course) a rejection.  I didn't get a chance to interview.  Another manager at Deloitte forwarded my resume to a recruiter as well.  I'm expecting a rejection again because I have no faith in recruiters.  Recruiters do what they are told and make no exceptions. Right now, they are told to look for college students and people with some public accounting experience.  I have 2 years experience in a large corporate environment and I passed the cpa exam, how does that make me less qualified than a college student.  I told them I wouldnt mind starting next summer or fall as well, but its still leading nowhere.  I applied to firms of all sizes, not just big 4.

Thats it so far.  Personally I think you are ahead of me, citizencpa.  At least you spoke to an agency.  I will probably do that soon.

I agree that when you apply to jobs at company websites, your resume pretty much goes into a black hole without anybody actually looking at it.  If you apply at a site like monster or hotjobs though (and you're not redirected to a company website), I think you have at least a shot at someone actually looking at your resume and giving you a call.  Seaching for a job isn't easy!  Hang in there! :-)

I don't think applying at company websites or monster/hotjobs makes a difference. In either case, the application is sent to someone right? I think the issue is with the individual's background. I recently applied to a few audit firms (mostly mid size) through their company websites and got responses from 4 of them. And I don't have my CPA yet. The reasons for the responses is that I have 3 years experience at a Big 4 firm.

Since you're willing to start as a first year associate though, I'm not sure why they don't give you interviews, but instead concentrate on only college students. I'm sure they have some sort of reason. Hang in there though, I pray you get something soon. I mean, they should realize how committed you are since you have completed the CPA.
