I am looking for a job in Southern California.

Temps like Accounting Temp did'nt even ask me to meet them since I do not have a work knowledge in Accounting......

I am not being picky about salary and been constantly applying but i guess not having work knowledge is posing a barrier..

I am a BCOM (accountancy major) with MBA -Fin ...do you think eligibility  for taking the CPA exam could be a problem?

Really? Accountemps are always looking for Accountants no matter where they get their accounting background from. According to industry news and articles theres an accounting shortage (I think they mean bookkeepers and payable/receivable clerks). I haven't really noticed because my graduating class had a ton of Accounting grads and there aren't many positions open for public accounting firms.

Your eligibility will probably hurt your chances if you're applying for a position in a public accounting firm. I don't see it affecting your chances of landing anything in a private firm though. I am not familiar with curriculum of Accounting majors in India. What are the accounting principles followed for India?

Strategoes:

My PT job was not in accounting at all.

It was in manufacturing (a temp job I did to help pay the bills).

The job with the mid-sized accounting firm was FT.

To answer your question, I am currently working in NYC.

Yes, I agree with you.

New York requirements are the most stringent.

Question:

If Robert Half sends you to Accountemps - they give you a test. What if you apply to Robert Half for a full-time, direct hire job? Do you still have to take the test, even if you've made it clear you're not looking for a temp job?

Good question. I really don't have any firsthand experience in applying for a direct hire full time position with Robert Half. But I did accompany my sister when she went to Robert Half's midtown office to meet her recruiter. Apparently it depends what kind of position you'd be applying for. She was applying for a management type position and they just interviewed her (20 minutes) and told her to search on their website and give them a call if a position interested her. Then they would contact the client to see if there was a match.

When I went to the Robert Half office (not Accountemps division) there were computers there for testing. It also depends on what software you've mentioned on your resume.

Thanks Strategoes. Anybody else have any experience with this? I'm planning to apply for staff accountant/senior accountant positions.
