Guys, come on. WannabCPA possibly works at a smaller company which doesn't offer any training program. Would you expect such company hire an entry-level CPA? Those companies can't afford that and they need immediate return and don't want to pay more to people who completed their CPA. It's a business and nothing personal. Plus, wannabCPA might not have completed any management courses and might not understand how companies work (I mean the whole picture) and why it's important to hire younger people. Not everybody looks for any long-term benefit.
And yes,
wannabCPA is right about the experience. Experience is more valuable than the CPA. Of course, I can't imagine how person working in taxes could fail REG.... Obviously, experience is not everything. :-)

Hi Lelik

what you are saying is your point of view and probably right. I started my career in a smaller firm and there is no training whatsover..there are a bunch of old people who have nothing to talk about except what is going on in their childrens life, how many pets they have and so on and on......man, i hated those days....but we are loosing the point here.....

What is going on for ages...does that mean we should be following the same rules....Ms. WannabCPA is the new generation CPA and looks like she is in a position where she can lead this change...But unfortunately..she has also fallen in to the same mindsight of a bunch of old bean counters...Is that not what accountants are called in America...

Ms.WannabCPa...what city do you work in...i think that aslo makes a difference in the mindsight....i started off at a small city and then moved on to bigger cities...i did notice a little bit of a change in the mindsight....so guys, who are looking for jobs out there....there is hope...it took me 4 months to find my first job inspite of having a MBA, CPA and some overseas experience....but had to start fresh in USA as a Staff Accountant...But beleive me, as time goes by same people like Ms. WannabCPA will run behind you with offer letters...

As far as Ms. WannabCPa is concerned, we can only hope and wish that she leads the change in the mindsight...or elss, we would be continued to be called as "Bean Counters". God i hate that word...I dont know if you like it Ms..

Jaan, we all are just speculating here. :-) We don't know where WannabCPA is, what exactly she does, what her life experience is, what kind of younger people she meets. Probably, she had some bad experience with the recent graduates who believed that they know everything and were a little too arrogant without any idea about the business ethics. :-) It happens. It's difficult to be a manager. Of course, it's not particularly clever to state that "I won't hire him because he has a CPA and no experience". Shouldn't we be kinder? There are many employers out there. If one doesn't want to hire you, it's his or her loss. Or, gain. :-)

I do tax & audit, more audit as I am still learning the tax which is why I am having trouble with REG lelik :) at small firm in So Cal. I work with a bunch of Big 4 alum all in their mid to late twenties. Aside from my stint as a state auditor (something I would never recommend unless you are near the end of your career) I've worked in big cities (i.e. Boston and Dallas), strickly doing audit. I think both Jaan and lelik touched upon an issue I haven't seen much on this board and that is the issue of age. I totally understand why it's important to hire younger people; however, not everyone graduating from college with an accounting degree and working on their CPA is young. There are also non-traditional students who are older. How do you think age factors into hiring descions at the staff level? To be honest, at the Big 4, I was only on one engagement with someone old enough to be my father, but that person was doing part-time contract work (he was in his fifties). Pretty much everyone I ever worked with were "traditional" (i.e. they started their public accounting career at the age of 21-25).
