Lelik, my husband was offered a job in SF and he rejected the offer after we checked cost of living, specifically rent. The only option was to live in Vallejo and commute. My husband works for a company with office in San Mateo. We would love to move and the owner of the company is OK with that, but the cost of real estate is a killer. Check online if you do not believe me. Ok, I am done with arguing here. It is actually up to that person if $43000 is enough for him or her. If you are single, think about taxes they are going to hit you with. NO one with take in consideration that your rent is through the roof. Buy the way, there are bunch of Russians working for my husband's company and they live in San Mateo, but they are all software engineers so they can afford that. I just really think that person who passed CPA exam deserves more than $43000 now days. How low can you go? It looks like accountants are really underpaid. I am going to apply for a job this fall and I was really disappointed after I read some of blogs here about CPA's pay. What was I thinking when I decided to get into this field? I think I will go solo after a couple of years with CPA firm. I do not want to make anyone rich. I do not want to be overworked and underpaid.

About pay adjustment for federal employees. That is the problem, that no one will pay accordingly to the cost of living because most companies cannot charge accordingly to the cost of living. Chicago is cheap compare to SF. Info is at your fingertips. Go online and search to rent an apartment in SF and you will be surprised. If you read Business Week, there were plenty articles about price of real estate and SF was considered the most expensive area, well except I guess Santa Barbara. Of course you can always rent a rat hole in drug infested area, there are plenty of those in SF. We used to live in Sacramento and we would spent every weekend in SF since there was not much to do in Sacramento.

Dahlia1, I don't know SF at all. What areas are considered o.k. (middle class)? In Chicago, you can also find studios for $2,000. It doesn't mean that there is nothing more on the market.

I am taking about clean, safe apartment not too far from the job. SF is way spread out. There are so many little towns and all together it is called Bay Area. The commute is a disaster, there are several toll bridges where you have to pay every time you cross. It creates bottleneck. The commute will take more than an hour and very stressful. The parking is very expensive. The best is to take the train, which is not cheap either. But if you work till 10pm, this is not safe. SF is not really the safest place unless you are very wealthy. I studied all the options since I really love that area, I do not mean downtown. I mean like San Mateo or other little coastal towns. Deloitte got an office in Foster City. I checked it yesterday, not further questions. It is way out of reach. We want to move at least to Santa Rosa because we love ocean and warm weather, but only Moss Adams, West coast CPA firm got office there in addition to some small CPA firms.
I just do not want that person, who got $43000 offer to get trapped in SF with no extra money saved to move out of there in nearest future. Of course, there will be always people who loves SF so much that they are ready to live wherever just to be in SF. That is different.

More people debating over lackluster compensation.  Only in the accounting profession folks.
