Getting a job through a connection doesn't change regarding what
industry you're in.....
I have a relative that got me an interview at a Big4 firm last minute. They
had a potential spot that needed to be filled and I got the interview
because my relative had been doing some name dropping....
Within the same three weeks, I networked with an old friend from high
school and he managed to get me an interview at another Big4 firm! Crazy
but true!!!!!
It's ALL about the connections if you don't manage to "follow procedure"
and get in via campus recruiting.

Saw this post and had to reply....
My GPA when I got hired at a big 4 office in NYC was a 2.9! (My grades
have one up considerably since then so my offer still stands). I know
someone who had worked in the NJ offices and I interviewed there, but
they didn't have any openings so they referred me to NYC.
I found out later from the person who helped get me in that although a
connection is good my interviews went extremely well. They had originally
told me that they wouldn't hire me until my grades improved, but had a
change of heart and offered me a job a week later.
I also know Big 4 is hiring 25% less people than the have in previous
years. Before if you knew someone you were probably a shoe-in, but now
its a lot more than just knowing someone. As for my experience, I
definitely think having someone help me get in the door helps, but you
also need really really good interview skills when you get there.
