most big firms also require you to work at least a half day on Saturdays during busy season.

The working hours are depended on the type of engagment and the industry and the fiscal year end.  I was in non profit industry, the auditors were here only 8-5 am , not bad at all.   If you work at tax field, of course, hours may be more but it also depends ....  most corporations are filed extension.  They are busy all year round.

I'm beginning my 4th year with KPMG.  You really can't pin point the # of hours.  It is truly dependent on your clients, their year-ends, and the circumstances at the time.  The only sure thing is you can expect to work at least 11 hour days in Jan-Mar.

You can expect to be billable for approximately 1980 hours a year.  Some unlucky people will be as high as 120% of that when all is said and done.  Others will be as low as 80% chargeable.  But 1980 is the standard.  It doesn't sound like a lot, but that is CHARGEABLE time, which excludes a whole lot of things you still have to do throughout the year like attend trainings (avg is between 7-10 full working days per year), travel to clients (I travel 4 mos a year), various administrative tasks (rough est. is 30 min avg per day), etc.
