Today I received my Performance Summary and I was shocked to see my scores compared to a passing candidate.  The first time I sat for the exam I bombed it so bad that it really didn't mean anything to me, but this time is different!

I failed this section I scored above 57 on the two sections that were weighted the heaviest!  My question is how the heck did I get a 59.  I was comparable to a passing candidate on ehtics (15-20%) and stronger on tax procedures (8-12%) and in the high 60's on the sections?  How is a 59 calculated?

Ethics (15-20%) 73

BUL (20-25%) 57

Tax Procedures (8-12%) 80

Property Transactions (8-12%) 68

Individual Taxation (12-18%) 59 (I have no clue how I did that since I prepared over 100 1040's this tax season).

Entity Taxation (22-28%) 63

Passing candidates were 76, 77, 76, 77, 77, & 78 respectively.

Can someone please shed some light on this?

There was one guy at our firm who had emailed me his report:

Passing Candidate My Range for the
Section Performance 75% to 80% Score section on test Average
Ethics and Responsibility 76 85% 15 20 17.5        0.18 15%
Business Law 77 63% 20 25 22.5        0.23 14%
Tax Procedures 76 78% 8 12 10        0.10 8%
Property Transactions 77 62% 8 12 10        0.10 6%
Individual Taxation 77 86% 12 18 15        0.15 13%
Entity Taxation 78 83% 22 28 25        0.25 21%
85 115 100        1.00 77%
My overall score 71%

He failed.  It seemed that he was curved down.  He is very upset and I don't blame him.  Not sure what to tell you or him other than keep trying.  In my state they don't mail you the score report unless you fail.  I would be eager to see what my said.

Chow-

Thanks for posting this for me.  This is so fck'd up!  He failed because of Business law!  I hate that subject with a passion.  Those who are border must be rocking in BUL.  Nothing else makes sense in his case.  Curving down....what a bunch of crap!

I'll tell you....I was feeling pretty crappy there for the past 10 days and once I got my report - I still feel bad but nowhere near as bad as I was feeling.  I knew in my heart when I left that testing center that it would be a close call if I passed and when I got my grade I was so disappointed to see that was in that 67-72 range.  That's what I was expecting to see if I didn't pass!  Because my grade wasn't sooo far off my goal, I'm still hanging in there.  My grade was probably slightly curved down as well.

It happens....those who failed just have to keep fighting.  BUL is a really tricky section of the exam.

Well, if you look at the two paragraphs above the diagnostic report it tells you that the scale does not represent the proportion of questions answered correctly. They also tell you that it is NOT possible to derive - or even approximate - your totl score from your performance results because the scores and performance results are calculated on different levels.

So it looks like this is another way for them to confuse us even more :)

I read the BS paragraph!  It doesn't take rocket science to figure out how they calculated it.
