I've been working a temp job for a sole proprietor who needed help with 1040 extensions.

There will ALWAYS be a need for tax preparers.  As much as I dislike taxes, it's a good skill to have.

I completely agree that it's going to take a lot, a lot, a lot for public accounting to really decline.  What made me nervous though was when John McCain said the first thing he would do to fix this economic crisis would be to fire the Chief of the SEC..hmm, not sure if that would really fix anything/if its even possible to do so.  Don't blame accounting

Agreed!  Taxpreparer will always be needed as politician keep changing the tax law as they see it fit (with their needs).

I just left PwC about two months ago and so did 5 other ppl I know that left from Big 4 to find better jobs.

Here is the market in a nutshell:

1) There is always a need for an accountant

2) If you were to look for a job today, it will be hard but not impossible. Just note that you will take a hit in salary b/c of the downturn, that is the only thi g to worry about.

It helps to share our thoughts about this crisis. I was starting to feel very unsecure about finding  a job even after passing the CPA.
