Eddie, why the impetuous move?  What's wrong with your current quality of life?

Eddie money, so your saying you dont have a likeable personality or not good looking. Dont get so down on yourself. Your a cpa. Id give up my rediculously good looks to pass this exam finally. But hey NYFD could be fun, I like that show w/ Dennis Leary "Rescue Me". But to your main point, I'm working with a new hire at EY and he has as much personality as a doorknob and cant understand a work he says. So im saying you may have a chance.

After much deliberation I'm actually thinking about joining the NYC fire department. Yes, it is surprising that after all these years of school, passing the CPA exam, almost a masters in taxation I would make such a move.

Its comes down to quality of life for me at this point. I would rather work 2 days (2 24 hour shifts), run into fires, rescue people,  hang out with the guys at the firehouse, etc. than sit behind a desk and account for other people's messes and headache's. If i want more money I can start my own business,  like most other firemen do. I need excitement at my job and accounting just doesn't do it for me.

Wouldn't it be funny if at the interview at the NYC FD they tell you, "sorry, were looking for someone with Big 4 experience."

This isn't just happening to accounting. There are very few fields that are experiencing growth. The recession is affecting every position more or less. You can't really make a significant career change because you'll need at least a ba degree in the field. In 4 years a lot will change.

Accounting, imo, is still doing a lot better than other fields. We have a lot of high paying positions (cpa firms) and even more of the lower paying jobs like bookkeepers etc.

Accounting is the language of business.

If you don't like it then the field isn't for you. For me, I am sticking to it. The market goes up and down and I am just going to ride it out.

If you are in CA, michigan, FL you are pretty much in the epicenter of this crash. The unemployment rate is high and employers know it. I currently live in CA and when I graduate I am leaving CA for the better states like TX.

This is funny. I'm from Michigan, and most of my friends have jobs lined up
already. We're all accountants. The economy in MI is terrible, and the only
people that are getting jobs are accountants. I don't know why. I'm not
going to stay here in MI after graduation though.
