My advice for getting into the Big after you miss your shot is to get into a top 5 accounting masters program like USC, UT or BYU and you will almost guarantee yourself a big four job;however, some state school kid will laugh at you for making a $50000 investment that will not pay as much if you had just gone to a small firm and invest $50000 somewhere or wait a couple years then go to big 4 as a manager.

Oh my God, what school charges $50K for a masters of accounting?! We're talking about the one-year, 30 credits program, right? There's dumpy MBA programs that don't even come close to that. That seems egregiously excessive. USC and UT both have Top 50 MBA and JD programs. Might as well as just get their MBA or JD, try to get into law, banking or consulting and leave the accounting field altogether.

The big 4 are full of *removed*.  They are nothing but a bunch of superficial idiots who know nothing about accounting.  All they care about is how good looking you are and whether they feel they can be friends with you.  I hear this from everyone that works at the big 4 and everyone who's been rejected by them.  My friend works there and can't stand it.  He feels that there are so many people there who clearly aren't qualified and yet they somehow have a job there.  He wants to transfer out eventually.

I'm sure everyone on this board (including me) has been rejected by the big 4.  Forget the big 4 and look for medium sized firms.

BTW, I hear that some of the big 4 are so deep in the hole that they are seeking gov't aid.  I would love to see the day the mighty "big 4" turn into the "big failures."

How qualified do you have to be to do accounting anyways? As an undergrad "major," the amount of material you need to learn and the difficulty of the material in accounting and just about every other business major besides things like quantitative finance pales in comparison to just about every non-business discipline. I think it's good to keep in perspective that accounting is not a glamorous field "at all." Not in a big 4 firm. Nowhere. It's just an area where some ambitious people start before launching off into bigger and better things.

As far as being qualified, I mean being an accounting major and at least pursuing a CPA.  It makes me nauseous hearing about all of these non-accounting majors who aren't even pursuing a CPA getting jobs at the big 4 simply b/c they may look good naked.  The last time i checked, the big 4 are accounting firms, and being an accounting major is a requirement, but apparently it's not for some people.

And I suppose you are right, accounting is not a glamorous field anymore.  Nor is a CPA; It's just something to have next to your name.  It is no longer a prestigious and unique title.  Instead, it is just a marketing tool to make you look somewhat attractive on your resume, but in the end it just gives you false hope.  I have not received one benefit from pursing the CPA.  ZERO.
