Hello all,
I am taking REG on 18th....really nervous about this one....

How important is it to know the '$ limits' on various topics? I just can't seem to memorize them all....I find REG really tough....

Any other suggestions to prepare for this exam will be greatly appreciated....I am using Gleim....

Thank you

Are you using Gleim online?  There are 20 modules.  Identify your weak areas in tax.  Reschedule your exam IF you think that you will fail REG.  Order Bob Monette's Hot Spots (Bisk) for those tax subjects.  Do NOT order any Hot Spots on Business Law.  They are a waste of money.

It is very difficult to teach yourself about taxes with Gleim.  I only use Gleim in a test mode.

Hi Jerry,

I have Gleim online, MCQs and books. I also have Becker 2008 books. Should I use Becker books to prep and use Gleim only for MCQ's and SIMs?

Thank you for the Bisk advice....appreciate your help.

As far as the dollar limitations, thresholds, etc. just have an idea with where the item falls; it usually will be obvious.

Hi TryingCPA, Thank you for your response. If you have any suggestions on how to prep better for the exam I will really appreciate it...

I'm taking REG 2 weeks from today.  I'm doing pretty well on the homework, but I keep hearing the sims are much harder than the ones in Becker.  Is this true, and how heavily tested is business law?

Let me first state that I do not learn from books.  I learn from a teacher and I use books as a reference, not as a substitute for a teacher.  I learned that lesson the hard way when I failed FAR just using Gleim and an out-of-date Becker book!

Gleim is a powerful tool, especially their Test Prep.  Gleim is better than just Wiley for organizing multiple choice questions.  However, Gleim's books and audio are useless to me.

I have the Becker books, Wiley books and Gleim books.  The Gleim books can go into the trash.  The only reason that I use the Wiley book is because Yaeger uses it.  The Becker book is like Cliff Notes, and it is the best book in my opinion.

Reading the Gleim book is as much fun for me as reading the dictionary.  I even have difficulty using it as a reference.  My Gleim book is sitting on the shelf, gathering dust.

Under the “Customized exam options” in Gleim you can select:

  • Questions I’ve never seen
  • Questions I’ve never answered
  • Questions I’ve never answered correctly
  • All available questions

Additionally, you can pinpoint the questions that you want to answer.  There are 20 units and then there are subunits under each unit.

I only use one review program at a time.  I use the Gleim Test Prep AFTER I finish my regular review program.

Bottom Line: There is not enough detail in the Becker book to help you with the multiple choice questions in Gleim!  Only Yaeger and Bob Monette with Bisk drill down to the multiple choice questions.  That is where I, and maybe you, need help.  If you are like me, you need help answering those multiple choice questions.

For what it is worth, I am almost exactly opposite from Jerry. I don't think I've ever learned anything from an accounting teacher (If I read the book ahead of class, I could follow along and the teacher's discussion would augment my understanding, but that is it). I am a reader of books and have learned just about everything I know from them.

That being said, I do find Gleim to be adequate so far. I will also state, in the interest of full disclosure, that I have never taken a CPA exam before and am sitting for my first one in just under 3 weeks. However, I am scoring in the high 70s to mid 80s in just about any Gleim MCQ combination the software can throw at me and still have 3 weeks to CRAM!!!

I find the books to be "fair" in the explanations. If you want examples and applications, they do fall short. REG is so much memorization, that I am finding the book to be fairly useful. However, there are times that I have had to pull an old textbook from the shelf to augement. When it comes to more conceptual ideas, I have yet to make a determination. FAR is next. I've got about a foot of old financial accounting books that likely explain anything that Bisk, Becker, or whoever else can.
