Whats so bad about getting laidoff, not like you were fired.

the perception by HR or head hunters is that people who were laid off were from the bottom of the barrel.

You can't get into these firms in the first place, if you are bottom of the
barrel.

Be confident, if you got laid of despite having stellar performance
reviews, then refer to that. Also have a reference in the company who can
vouch for your good performance on the job. Be patient, and keep
attacking the job search!

You can't just have 25% of the labor force cut and assume that these
people were all "bottom of the Barrel."

That being said, I think many of us, if not most of us would prefer
corporate accounting to public, and are in public for the purpose of fast
tracking. I digress.

You may be happy to know that the banks, who let a TON of people go in
the hight of the meltdown, have had to start hiring people back because
the markets have been going up up up all year long. They are eating it,
too, because they have to give everyone signing bonuses and stuff. All of
the lagging indicators still suck, but I bet you will see the same thing
happen in the accounting world. Who knows, keep talking to the HR
person where you worked and see if your position revived itself because
of IFRS, new bank regulations, and tax law reforms. Health care reform
will certainly create a greater need for accountants.

Keep at it, y'all. We are part a great profession. If anyone can weather the
recession, accountants can.

Actually, that is absolutely not true. Yes, maybe 2 years ago when  the economy started facing the drain, the companies were "trimming the fat" so to speak. And not in a sense of how poorly their employees perform but how much of resources they were trying to save. This year, when companies are laying people off, they are cutting into the very meat.

As someone who was laid off from Big 4, I, too, felt uncomfortable telling HR and recruiters that. But trust me, they did not react in any way because they hear this all the time now. I would they'd be surprised if people are just switching jobs. Moreover, if you do hide your lay off and it comes up later on, as it will, the prospective employer might wonder further into the legitemacy of your lay off.

But this is not to say that this job-searching journey won't be tough. I was looking for a job for 5 months. Eventually, leading a great job at a very prestigious firm with my position of preference. In the meantime, I was able to finish passing all of my exams.

So good luck and be honest. HR does know what's been going on - it's on the news everyday.

Thanks for all the inputs. I did land a job after I was unemployed for four months. I told the HR the truth. I was laid off because of my performance at big 4. However, I performed very well in my previous job where I stayed for five years, which probably saved me somehow.

Good luck to everybody who is doing jobhunting. Economy is bad, but there is always an opportunity out there.

Thanks again for all your posts!
