Nan,
CFE sounds very interesting, and the demand will only keep increasing
for the experts in the field - I say you go for it - all the chances
are that you'll do great and will feel very happy with your decision 10
or 20 years from now.
I am planning on going into tax, so I'll start taking Masters in
Taxation courses (online) next year. I hear Golden Gate University has
a reputable program. I plan to focus on tax for partnerships/LLC's and
small businesses, as many construction, real estate, manufacturing
clients I can get (I have experience in these fields).
I have also recently passed the exam for a Real Estate Salesperson, and
plan to go into that as well - so the plan is to focus on tax during
tax season, and the rest of the year a mix of tax work and real estate.
I am very interested in both fields, and I'm thinking one will help the
other - meeting people, and also many tax clients might be interested
in investing in real estate, etc. So, everything on a small scale,
providing personalized service to smaller clients.
On top of all that, I'd like to be able to do a small construction
project from time to time - I like the flexibility in a smaller CPA
firm, that I could adjust my work hours/schedule to fit an occassional
project in. Last year I finished my first construction project (I was
my own General Contractor), and it was tons of fun, but would not want
that as a full time job, or the only job.
So, hopefully I have a good recipe for my future - a mix of things that
I really like - intellectual work (tax) + just the right amount of
working with people, not too much nor too little (tax/real estate), and
to counterbalance accounting - design/artistic/working outside in the
mud and rain (construction).
Sorry about the length of this post... Personally, I am also interested
in hearing what other people are planning or enjoying in their careers
- good decisions and bad decisions, and why - there is so much to learn
from other people's stories!
