PA is a pretty dry market right now.  There are a lot of companies that are established and don't really lay off so the unemployment rate is low here BUT there is no growth.

If you just want to get a job in the accounting field check out Washington DC.  Md is right though, a bachelors degree is basically a peice of paper at this point..the CPA will give you the edge.  A lot of the designations are going to lose value in my opinion though...with the increased number of people taking the tests the market will be flooded with CPAs/CFAs/MBAs etc with no work experience demanding a premium for their work.

That too.  A lot of these "established" companies also look to hire their suburban children or their friends hence that's the "hidden job market" /"jobs by networking" I don't have much access to.  I'm a blue collar NE Philly Irish Catholic who has no lineage in the professional workforce.  I could swing a trade union job or cop a few years ago.  I'm the 1st in my family to go to college and now well.... seems like it was a bad time to do as such.  Think I have to look for a growth area to get hired plus pass the CPA.

Yeah, networking is the only way to secure a job in this environment.  I am attending a networking event in Wilmington next tuesday.  Its a class that a financial firm is offering (counts as CPE credits) to try and entice CPAs to show up.  I am going to have a couple beefeater/tonics and start schmoozing haha.

Applying online is like firing your resume into the abyss, and walking door to door seems more like desperation than confidence at this point (my opinion).  I think the key to remember is everyone is in the same boat, eventually opportunities will surface.

Yes the best advice is Networking I have just joined the YPN and I am a member of the PICPA. My dad (Doctor) is trying to network for me as well but its tough out there.

I had a job interview with a family run company that was looking for outsider YESTERDAY. They only had 1 CPA working in the whole darn company. The accounting jobs are there but CPA will get you to another level. I felt I was overqualified for strictly data entry at this point.

Unlike most people I will not demand a premium if they will give me the req'd experience I might make that deal with them. Less Benefits if they will take me on etc...

Do you have ANY experience?

Myself- I worked as an IRS Agent for almost a year then a small/mid sized CPA firm for 2 years after.  I know most people will say "why did you leave the IRS job?" well I had a manager who was basically Gordon Ramsey and has about a 50% turnover and that's only counting firings and force-outs plus he was a lousy mentor and I didn't learn crap.  It makes Jack Welsh's GE 20/70/10 vitality curve look like socialism and this is a government job.
