Thanks Divya! So basically if I'm understanding this right, any changes in tax law or accounting rules won't be testable until 6 months after they come into effect. Since I plan to take both REG and FAR by January (w/c is less than 6 months from now), it doesn't matter which I take first.

Bruin, my guess is that the 2009 version material you currently bought has the changes which happened upto last year as they usually print the next year's edition in Nov/Dec.
Unfortunately, even if it is less than 6 months to your exam, be it any section, you would have to manually update the material with the updates they issue separately on their site:
http://beckerkb.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/beckerkb.cfg/php/enduse r/std_alp.php?p_sid=-Ywl38Fj&p_accessibility=0&p_red irect=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBf cm93X2NudD0yOSwyOSZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y9JnBf c2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTE *
You can check the updates and proceed accordingly. The software may already be updated (pass master, lecture, final exams, sims), however, textbook may be not.
I would advise you to verify all the changes. Do let know in case you face any more doubts. I know it's highly important that our study material should be updated as per latest changes which are testable !
In fact, try to call up the Becker representative and verify about the updated material.... I bought my 2009 edition material last year in mid Dec and I had to update all changes which happened in 2009 and testable at the time of my exam.
