Annoyings:  That is what I said during the exit interview.  I told them it was a mismatch to my experience.  The senior there is supposed to cover three industries and I only have experience in one of them.  I tried so hard to catch on the other two parts.  I still failed.  It seemed to me that everybody can get a good coach except me.  Anyway, it is over.

Hi Annoyings,

Thanks for your suggestion.  I really did not realize that is badmouth.  I am just trying to get some clues why I got fired.  You are absolutely right, I am the person to be blamed most.  I believe I lack in experience.  Industry senior should not be as the same level of big 4 senior.

I used to love challenges.  After working for big 4, I really doubt it about myself.  I believe in any working environment, manager should give proper guidance to new hires.  Give them definate deadlines. Help them to adapt to new environment, firm's way of working, and culture, not leaving new hires in the dark and firing them after busy season.

I am really glad I got fired by big 4.  At least I get my life back.  I believe working for industry can get me same experience and most importantly I am happier.

Is it possible that communication was an issue? It's obvious that English is not your first language and depending on the company culture, that may not work in your favor. Maybe they got frustrated with you and the communication barriers. Who knows these days about employers.

Something else I'm not understanding is that you said your boss was mad because you billed a lot of time to the client. Am I understanding that correctly? I thought that's what the Big 4 wanted, not to mention I thought that's how they made their money.

That is what I thought too.  But they tried to keep the client, that is why they did not like my hours.

No.  Public accounting firms want to BILL large hours, not have them actually worked.  For example, if you're on a 6 hour budgeted project, and it gets done in 4, awesome, lets bill them 10!  However, if you do that project in 10, your ass is grass unfortunately.

At my last job, I was given a project that took the guy before me 16 hours to do the year before and he had 3 years experience.  It was budgeted for 5 hours for me.  I finished it in like 22 hours, worst project ever and you bet I got called into the manager's office.  The thing was, I only did it 6 hours slower than the much more experienced guy!!

Sometimes you're just gonna get screwed over.  It sounds like your private sector experience wasn't a perfect match with the experience required to become a big 4 senior accountant.

I think office politics is HUGE factor in big 4, more than industry. First it is very hierarchical, your senior or manager can definitely break you. It may not even have anything to do with your ability as an accountant, if somehow they don't like you, its over. You will get the toughest and most annoying assignments, bad reviews, its really difficult. The trick to succeed in any big 4 is to be liked by whoever is writing the review. You will see a lot of sucking up etc. Industry is different because your seniors and managers in industry don't have as much power. Unfortunately, its hard to fit in with your seniors or managers if you are much older than them. But being liked is the most important thing in any big 4 environment.

Thats also true of smaller firms as well. If you aren't well liked, you are screwed. And being well liked does not mean just being a fun nice person. You really need to be going to every function which will require you to spend a lot of time with co-workers. If you are somone who is married and would rather spend time with the wife and an addition is health conscious and dont want to do lunch and happy hours all the time, well your screwed. Find a different field.
