Actually, by the time you take the required courses in order to advance
to upper division and take the advanced courses, you will be an
accounting major. So what you said sort of doesn't make sense. Most
schools only offer enough upper accounting courses to give you a BS in
Accounting.

Okay, let me put it that way... You can take all the classes you need to
graduate with an Accounting degree but one (let's say Business Law for
the sake of argument). Suddenly you decide you don't want to be an
accounting major, you want to be an Economics major. You take all the
economics classes and you graduate with a BS Economics. Now you are
not an Accounting major but you have all the accounting classes to sit for
the CPA exam. I know it's hypothetical (and highly unlikely situation) but
now I hope you understand that what I said "soft of makes sense." No
school is going to stop you from taking the upper level classes if you
have already taken the prerequisites regardless of the major you have
declared.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I think the most reasonable thing for me to do at this time would be to begin taking classes at ACC to see if I even have an aptitude for accounting. Maybe once I take Intermediate Accounting, I'll want to quit :-P

And there's no guarantee that I would even be admitted into UT's program. (It actually moved up to #1 in 2009). But even if I could get in for next fall, there's no point right now. I can always spend a fortune on another graduate degree later. Because even though you don't need to be an accounting or other business major to get into the program, most of the student are.

Hey lolitalamb,

I am a native to Texas but living overseas teaching English right now.  I graduated from UT with a degree in political science.  I'm looking to get into accounting because I enjoy working in an office environment behind a desk.  Having a stable job and pay would be nice too.

One night I sat down and seriously thought about picking up and going back home to re-enroll into UT and getting into the Accounting program, or going to Austin Community College and getting the courses there.

Going back to UT would be great but it would take me over 2 years to get all the credits I need for the Bachelors of Accounting, and most importantly set me back 16-20k in tuition.

Going to Austin Community College, I won't get a Bachelors in Accounting, but I can get all the accounting and business courses in about 2 years that are required to sit for the CPA.  ACC will also be dead cheap, I'd pay something like 600-700 a semester to take a full load, so the 2 years there will only set me back 2000-3000 in tuition.
ACC even has a certificate program for people like us who already have a bachelors but want to get into accounting/sit for the CPA.  I'd look into that.  ACC will also help you find internships after completing your first 2 semesters in the program if I'm not mistaken, and if you are a UT alum like I am you can use all the career services to find one as well.

As of right now I'm taking some intro Accounting courses through distance learning with ACC right now.  I hope to get a few classes out of the way before I return home and enroll full time this summer.

We should keep in touch, if you'd like to email me my email is dmd436 at gmail.com
