Have you tried asking for a raise?  Do they have some kind of annual review or performance evaluation?  It's a small company, so maybe they just forgot or they are waiting for you to ask.  Hopefully you can at least negotiate some extra time off.

I agree that you should be grateful you have a job in this economy.  However, being grateful to have a job certainly shouldn't prevent you from sending out some resumes to other employers.  I would definitely be doing that if I were in your position.

Yes, I do agree it's a good idea to send out resumes but just don't quit your job. So many people have done this and lived to regret it.

45k in NYC for somebody with 5 years of experience... it seems low. I
graduated last year and started with 60+k in private ( I am also in the NYC
area). Look for something better. I know it's tough in this economy but you
are certainly underpaid. I do not even want to comment on your "days off"
situation. Good luck!

In my most recent position, I was a S.A. for a small privately held company in Florida where the salaries generally are lower (they pay you in sunshine $).  I made $45,000 and worked incredibly long hours.

I need some advice...  I graduated 04 and worked in private business for almost 3 years and I decide I have to go to public accounting firm, I thought I was lucky enough to get into a CPA office on dec 07 in NYC. but I only got offer for 45k, 5 pay day off and 5 national holiday. [ so I have to work on labor day :( ] I have been working in here for almost 2 years without a raise and bonus... Does this sound not fair or it is reasonable since economy suck ?
This is a family business, we have only 5 people in this company, 2 are part time, my boss's family members.  I am thinking I may want to find another CPA firm, because I want to move on to the next higher level... but as I read through post in this forum i dont know if i have chance to find something good . :(
Please feel free to give any comment

Wow, yeah, they are taking advantage of you for sure. I started out in Manchester, NH with a midsized firm and was offered $46k right out of college (0 expereince). I also had 3 weeks of vacation (15 days) and paid holidays. Manchester is not an expensive place to live and there is no state income tax. Then my next year I got a raise to $50k. However, this was before the economy tanked.

So I'd say def start sending some resumes out, but don't quit the job until you have another. A job is better then no job, and there are a lot of people out there that would be grateful to have a job

Thank you for all these replies... But I am wondering should I give up a public accounting position ? or I should  only look for public accounting firm position? I see many private firms offer higher salary and better benefit. But I think I should stick with public accounting in order to fulfill experience requirement for CPA license ?
