It also depends on which location/office you are in.  If you live in LA, SF, SJ, Chicago, or NY, there are tons of minorities working with the Big4.

The reason I posted this question is, I live in Southern California and the number of minorities here in Big 4 does not correlate with the number of minorities in accounting classes or population, which is amazing. And you will hardly find an african american in any of Big 4 here. I am curious where Jessie Jackson is looking

That's just the way it is in a great country of U.S.! But seriously, why for example do you see so many minorities at Wal-Mart? The racial inequality can be quite a sore in an eye. Affirmative action and such programs try to address these issues.

Again that's the reason for less minorities in Big 4. There just isn't enough of qualified candidates. And again the reason in turn being that the minorities are predominantly being born into low socio-economic demographic and are disadvantaged from the start.

Don't underestimate the lead-time advantage. That's why parents try to do all the best for their kids, b/c intuitively they know how important it cna be for their children down the road.

political conversations aside, i found that the % of minority employees at the big 4 i worked for was similar to the % of minority students in my accounting class at a big 10 university.  probably because big 4s recruit directly from those schools.

what city is it? in some masters programs in the Bay Area minorities make up to 75% of the program but they hardly make 10% of the Big 4 work force

I think one big problem right now is during the recent layoff season a lot of Visa holders (F1? H1?) end up getting targeted first. But in overall recruiting, I haven't noticed any serious discrimination other than the hottest girl in our class had like six offers when most of us averaged two >.>

As for minorities, it is harder if u are international student since companies are reluant to issue visas, but if u are say, Greencard holder or higher, it is not an huge deal.

I would agree that minorities in Big 4 accounting aren't common (maybe ~5%) but I would also agree with another poster in that the firms would LOVE LOVE LOVE to hire a qualified minority.  They all want to be the firm with the highest percentage of minority employees, but they aren't going to sacrifice the quality of their services either to do it, meaning they aren't going to hire someone just because they are a minority when there is another person that they feel is more qualified/capable who happens to also be white.  It just isn't going to happen.  Now if they feel the two candidates are equal, I could definitely see the minority getting the nod.  Bottom line is, I truly don't think there is any sort of agenda going on other than the firms want to hire the most qualified and capable, regardless of race.
