I do not think AICPA tells the firms to lay people off. The firms just do not want to pay for idle time unless they really think you worth it and they will not find anyone better than you. It is really a seasonal job and I do not know why they do not make it officially seasonal. Then people would not be hurt after tax season. They would be getting into this field knowing that it is seasonal. I bet you so many people would not get into tax. I am glad it is seasonal since I want to open my own place but I need someone to sign for my experience. If I get laid off, I will pay someone to sign. About the passing rate, AICPA curves and it is well known but I think they curve up, not down, so what are you complaining about? I got 99 on REG and I would not give myself 99, so go figure.

I think the financial statements of the AICPA would be helpful in determining what the fees and dues are expended on.

Do you really think you'll uncover the scam that easily? The AICPA is made up of people who compile and audit financial statements for a living! Materiality? Miscellaneous expenses? "Other" assets? They can hide their tracks with precision!

Ignore the fact that a large amount of collusion would have to take place between AICPA members, psychometrics, CPA Exam preparatory material sellers and colleges to make this scam work.

Heisenberg is right. This conspiracy is bigger than you. Meeting the educational requirements? Scam. Paying to take the exam? Scam. Having to purchase preparatory materials? Scam. Pass rates which are not all over the place? Scam. Firms which are not hiring amidst difficult economic times? Scam. Not guaranteed 100K salary? Scam. All by the AICPA.

Run, don't walk, away. You already know too much.

It's not difficult to get a tax season job at H&R Block or one of their competitors.  However, they usually do want you to take their course first, which costs maybe a couple hundred dollars and takes place around now.

I came from one of those chains, an H&R Block competitor that charged only $45 for its course.  I was a long time IT person who was looking for a way to make money on the side because I was always about to get laid off.  (And yes, there are fields doing much worse than accounting, for example, IT since the dot com crash around 2001).  I worked there part time tax season for 3 years before finally giving up on IT and going full time with tax at a CPA firm.
