Hey, nice to hear from tax folks and lawyers.  I'm a tax person who likes tax for the most part.  Law is what I was really interested in for a long time, but I'd never be able to spend the $150k+ and 3 years not working, so that option is out.

Barry223 and Kfan, what kind of work do you guys do?  Are you working at law firms?

No, I never attended law school. I know several people who have. My comments are based on what I have read about the legal job market. It doesn't sound like I was far off based on the additional comments.
As for my work, I finished my CPA program this summer and have attempted two parts of the exam so far (waiting for results). I'm beginning to job hunt more now, but am expecting the worst based on what I've read on this board.

Keep in mind when you expect the worse, that's exactly what you are going to get. If you are positive, then your confidence will shine through and the interviewers will see this. The key is to focus on your resume. Many people think their resumes are good but you have to keep an open mind about it.

kj_nyc -
I work in the tax department for a mid-sized CPA firm. My only
experience working in a law firm was a summer job in law school
working for a small general practice firm. The people there were nice but
it really opened my eyes to the fact that I really wasn't cut out for that
sort of work. Nasty divorces, families torn apart over incredibly bitter
disputes over the most meager estates (like grandma's house worth
$40k), even a murder trial. Dealings with opposing counsel were often
also very confrontational. Suffice it to say I was a bit too sensitive for this
kind of work.

I had always wanted to do some kind of business-related transactional or
consulting work, but since I went to a non-elite school and had only
average grades, this wasn't a very realistic option in a law firm setting.
Long story short, I ended up going down the accounting path and have
never looked back.

Bottom line is that there are way too many lawyers and not nearly enough
jobs (let alone good jobs) to go around. My advice would be to anyone
here thinking of going is that the tradeoff is not worth it if you're trying
to enhance your Big 4 career, and if you want a good chance at working
for a big law firm stay away unless you can get into a top (and I mean
*top*) school, like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, NYU.

Good point Cflas. I guess that I should have said that my expectations are more realistic compared to before I started reading this board.
