Yes you can take ethics exam any time you want and really only takes one afternoon and some good scanning of the study guide to find the answers. It is only 40 questions even though the scan sheet shows 240. Do it online and you instantly find out if you pass or not. You need a 90% and have 3 tries. I got 80 then 88 then 98 on my third try. They automatically forward your score to your state board if you do it online as well.

The reply I got from the Washington State Board of Accountancy is that you have to pass all sections of the exam before taking the ethics exam. I wonder if it's different for other states.

Ethics is not just a topic but a vast field covering all aspects of our life which are dealing with us in direct or indirect way.

NM Board lets you take it before all sections passed. I did not find the test difficult at all but I did go through the entire CD and read the study guide.
