Well, the average level of education in Europe is much higher. Any international comparison of standardized testing will back this up. The U.S. always comes in towards the bottom in math, science, etc. in these rankings. Americans are infamous for poor knowledge of history and geography as well compared to Europe. We have some very outstanding schools for the elite in the U.S., but the average level of education remains very low. The higher average level of education in Europe is why they have much fewer far right Christian lunatics. It's no accident that in the U.S., there are a lot more Christian extremists in the South compared to the Northeast. Which region of the country do you think has a higher average level of education?

Hey,
Cheer up, i've never worked for a Big Four, only heard stories. I have though worked in a wall street i-bank, which required getting into work really early everyday, and leaving late when the place got busy. The work was probably reminded me of auditing work where there was a lot of verifying information, and there was tons of it. I felt tired all of the time and passed out as soon as I got home, just to get up extremely early to do it again. The benifit is that it looked REALLY good on my resume and is probably going to help for a long time, and the fact that I worked so hard, when I move to another job, every other job feels extremely easy because of the lack of intense constant focus. So, there was job security, until the recent financial/economic crisis. Which is why I'm going for the CPA now. If I were you, I would stick in there and fight it out and think of it as a game or challenge rather than "work". Stick it out and you will be stronger in the long run.
Good luck

I think there are certain personalities that fit the big 4 culture and personalities that do not. Some people enjoy work and some don't. I had the same experience, I worked at another financial services company before big 4 and in my opinion it was harder than big 4 by far. So when I started at big 4, the work appeared easy.... the office politics was something else though.

Just do what I do....
Don't take your job so seriously. If you hate it and have a little self-confidence than you don't have to worry about getting laid off or fired. Just put your head down and do the work the best you can and what happens will happen. Have the mindset that you're better than this job and that you don't care whats happening around you. All you have to worry about is taking care of business and all the the little things will seem just that.
