If firms are only recuriting from internships, that sure does stink.  I'm doing my BS in accounting online from Washington State, so I can't do an internship since I'm on the other side of the country.  I guess I will just have to try my luck sneaking into the career fairs at schools in NY and NJ when I approach graduation, which should be in 2012.  Right now I'm leaning toward working at a Fortune 500.  I'm one of the few people who could not care less if I get hired by the Big 4 (which I likely won't anyway since I can't do an internship and my netowrking skills are a disaster).

Do I even stand a chance of getting a job 2 years from now, or did I shoot myself in the foot by going the online route?  I can't see the fact that I got an online degree being an issue since I am getting it from a highly reputable AACSB accredited institution.

If you don't graduate until 2012, then there's still time to transfer to a school where you can get noticed more easily by the firms. It's true that internships are usually the biggest sources of recruitment for CPA firms, particularly the more notable ones. However, since you seem to want to go into industry accounting you might be a little better off with where you are than if you were trying to go into public accounting. (I'm assuming you want do industry accounting since you mentioned Fortune 500).

Even still, I've never understood the concept of sneaking into career fairs. If the firms recruiting at career fairs are looking for students from that school, then they'll see a different school on your resume. Wouldn't that eliminate most chances of getting an interview? I don't know. I don't have any experience with that kind of thing myself, but it's something I've wondered about.

Nope, even though I passed 2 sections of the CPA in 2009, this year its all about the GPA, they could care less which school you are coming from as long as it has a descent reputation.

It all depends if the economy will turn around. We do not have a time machine therefore we do not know.

Thnaks for the advice.  I would not mind leaving NYC since it is super expensive so there is a good chance I might go to WSU's career fair once I am near graduation.  I have a bunch of frequent flyer miles so the trip would be virtually free.  My goal would be to go the fair and get hired by a Seattle based company (and therer are a lot of good companies in Seattle).  Of course, I have no clue what the economy will look like in 2012, although I have heard that Seattle is doing better than most of the country, including NYC.

By the way, when I said "where you are," I was referring to your choice of how you were getting your accounting education, not your geographic location.

I actually can't even figure out where in the country the jobs are myself. I had heard Texas was doing better than most of the rest of the country, so I've been looking and applying there as well, but it seems like most of the accounting jobs there are just for experienced people, just like everywhere else.

I know Driftwood, makes you wonder if these firms or companies are really serious about hiring people.
