Yeah, I have a sneaking suspicion that some of the firms aren't actually hiring, but they're still holding on-campus interviews for the purpose of maintaining their working relationships with the schools, who provide them with a steady stream of candidates for future reference. Obviously, this is pure speculation on my part, and I hope I'm completely wrong.

Incidentally, y'all had mentioned the idea of getting interviews by sneaking into career fairs, and I guess that could help if an interview was being held at the employer's office, but I definitely don't see how it could help with how most of the CPA firms seem to do their entry-level recruiting, which is through on-campus interviews. For those, you have to submit your resume through the school's career website, and you have to be a student or an alumnus to do that.

Ive done it back in October. Most of the firms couldn't tell me if positions were available, but basically you hand your resume personally. Its good to go if you need the special gov't links.

Your right, most of the firms were there for lip service.

Oh, OK. Well, I've done the career fair thing multiple times myself where you physically give your resume to the employer and hope you hear something.

What I'm talking about, though, is the actual on-campus interviews where you submit your resume through your school's career website and see if you get selected to interview at your school with a potential employer. If selected, you pick a time slot to interview on the day the employer will be there. The interview takes place at your college's career department in a closed office where you sit down for about 30 minutes with usually one or two people from the company conducting the interview.

In order to get an interview, I've always had to submit my resume through my school's website, regardless of whether or not the employer also got my resume at a career fair. I've never gotten a call just by giving out my resume at a career fair, but I have had employers who seemed interested in interviewing me based on what they saw on my resume at the career fair. Guess what they told me, though - "Be sure to submit your resume online if you haven't already done so." This has just been my experience, though. Maybe others have had better results from the career fairs alone.

I know what you mean, and I had the bulk of my interviews on campus. Once your an Alumni they don't care about you.

I've heard similar things on other forums, primarily the MBA forum at the Business Week website, so it is likely true that companies with no open positions are attending career fairs.
