Hi,

I have not passed or taken the exam yet, but will schedule it soon.  Have a question.  If you pass the exam in say New York, then find a job in California and start working there, do you have to re-take the exam in California?  Or can you just tell the program that you passed in NY and want to transfer your exam scores to the California one?  This is all in that you do not have enough accounting work experience to receive the certification immediately.

No, you don't need to retake the CPA exam, but you should be able to fulfill other State requirements, such as education(if it's 150 cr/h) and experience.
If you are going to work as a staff accountant/auditor (no attestation services and no your own CPA practice), you don't need to transfer your license at all.

Lelik, in CA s/he has to be certified by the CA Board or obtain a yearly practice privilege permit regardless of the job title to use the CPA title.

Thanks Major Contributor!

I didn't think you would have to take it again, but who knows there could be a grey area in there for certain states, not California or NY, but maybe another.  I was just curious, because what if you work for the same company for many years, but you change offices, which are in different states.  For example, if you worked at a big four firm, then you moved to another state every few years, because of personal reasons or whatever else.

What if you find a better job after 3-5 years, then you change states, often, I guess you just have to keep updating the CPA license forms, etc.

THanks

As far as I know CA and FL are the two states that require you to be certified in their states. Pretty much every other state has signed the UAA or mobility law(s).

Edit: FL does have practice privileges for out of state CPA's.
