KJ - I want to get your e-mail so we can stay in touch. I am not certain how often I'll frequent these boards going forth.

Mine is bryris@tampabay(dot)rr(dot)com.

E-mail me tonight with your address - I also have a quick question for you.

Degrees don’t determine professional success. What is a better career path: tax accountant or tax lawyer? It depends on different variables and career interests. Some variables are determined even before the start of your undergraduate studies, e.g. intelligence, social skills, personality, family environment and location…

Interesting topic... thanks to all the posters.

I am in a similar situation. I have my JD from a T10
school and practiced for a couple years in corporate at a
big firm before getting laid off due to the economy. Now
I'm getting my Tax LL.M.

One career path I'm looking at is tax consulting (ideally
international tax) at an accounting firm. My question is
about salaries. I know accounting is a lot less
lucrative, but how much of a gap are we talking about?
Specifically, what sort of salary would someone with my
background get at a Big 4 (or just outside... GT or
McGladrey) doing tax work in Atlanta or Charlotte? Thanks
in advance for any help!

A counter calculates the taxes owed and can advise clients on how to maximize or minimize exposure to different taxes.
A lawyer litigates on taxes, such as judgments for payment of taxes on some in order (criminal) or for companies that believe they should be exempt from certain taxes, such as not paying a tax on the covers of sausages because it is not really the food.
The tax law is a subset of constitutional law.
