Hi,

You definitely need a tax attorney if:

-You have a taxable estate, need to make complex estate
planning strategies, or need to file an estate tax
return.

-You are starting a business and need legal counsel about
the structure and tax treatment of your company.

-You are engaging in international business and need help
with contracts, tax treatment, and other legal matters.

-You plan to bring a suit against the IRS.

-You plan to seek independent review of your case before
the US Tax Court.

-You are under criminal investigation by the IRS.

- You have committed tax fraud (such as claiming false
deductions and credits) and need the protection of
privilege.

Regards

I think that comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges.  Do you want to be a lawyer or do you want to be an accountant?  If you become a tax lawyer you will probably never get your CPA, but will have to pass a grueling 3 years of law school and pass the bar.

Are you still in college full-time or are you working now (and what's your age)? If you have great grades, and haven't started working yet, sure go to law school and try to be a lawyer that focuses on tax. However, if you need an income to support yourself and/or a family, do you really think that you could do what takes people three years to do full-time at night after coming home from work?

How good do you think you are? While accounting is competitive, it's one of the few jobs that you can get a decent salary with just an undergrad degree. Plus, it's a normal middle class job with average joes who did their homework in college. However, getting a job as a tax lawyer is an all or nothing deal for Type A's. You'll probably need great grades from a top law school to even get an interview. But you'll be rewarded with a very lucrative career (and long hours).

So, what do YOU want out of life?

You should first consider on your interest and then select the choices. Thanks for posting.

An accountant calculates taxes owed & can advise clients on how to maximize or minimize exposure to different taxes.
An attorney litigates cases about taxes, such as prosecutions for paying to few taxes intentionally (criminal) or for companies who feel they ought to be exempt from definite taxes, such as not paying a tax on sausage coverings because it is not actually food.
Tax law is a subsection of constitutional law.

gennatay,

Why would you want an EA license after you pass the CPA exam?
