Well, in his defense, being an accounting teacher doesn't mean he hasn't worked for the Big Four. For instance, I didn't even get my accounting hours at an overly prestigious university, and two of my professors had worked for PWC. One had even been a partner there. I never could figure out why he left that job to work in academia.

Maybe he was tired of the stress, or wanted a different environment. It's a lot cozier being a professor than being a partner. Some people as they get older may tire of the corporate rat race.

Don't take career advice from professors. They only know what they are told and what they read, and while that information is valuable (it'd better be) it is not the be-all and end-all. If I listened to my professors I'd believe that not getting into PWC was the end of the world and Becker was the only review course worth taking to pass the CPA. The bottom line is that professors don't know everything and unless you have aspirations of being a professor yourself, take any and all career advice with a grain of salt.
