If you stay any longer, and don't want to make partner, you are actually hurting your career, as you get pigeonholed into one type of skill set, be it audit or tax companies would rather hire a person with experience running a business, vs audting them or preparing their tax returns.
I thought this way when I was in school, got into a Big 5 (at the time) firm, was miserable for my entire time there and moved on to a private company. The experiences at the CPA firm was good, you learn quick and it boosts your resume, but by no means is it a guaranty to an executive position.
