The biggest challenge with the CIA is to be able to focus on the stuff. It is so freaking boring that your mind just drifts off when trying to read the material.

Thankfully, I passed part I this weekend (did part II first). I did not even open up any of the last three chapters of the Gleim book, I just could not face that boredom. I could not even tell you what questions on the exam could have come from the part that I did not study. What helped me most is doing test questions and recognizing the pattern. Most of the questions are so vague that it would not really be of much use trying to figure out what the question is about.

Hi Vicky,

What pattern were you referring to?  Would you share your experience?

A lot of the questions are phrased differently but end up with the same answer. E.g. they pose scenarios of whether/when it is unethical to receive a gift. The details of the scenario change, but the answer is always the same. Another typical one is a regarding what is not an internal auditor's responsibility. Pick the answer where it says something about implementing corrective action, implementing internal controls or implementing whatever. There is often the answer that is always wrong and contains "all", e.g. "assurance of ALL internal control", "ALL processes", etc. Just look for patterns and the little trick words.

I passed part 1 of CIA exams today. I bought the IIA Learning System almost three weeks ago and did all of the questions three times. I studied the questions and answers diligently to make sure that I understood the nuance of each question. I only referred to the text when I didn't understand the concept that was explained in the answers. Now on to part 2.
