My goal after getting my CPA license is to climb the ranks to become a CFO.  Making money all depends on the size of the company you work with.  The CFO of the company I am with makes in the mid $100's.  Our company is smaller in size, so do the math.  He also spoke of larger companies he worked for where he made in the $300-400+ range.  If you strictly want to be controller, plant accountant, etc., then you may not break the $100K mark, but that's still good money depending on what area you live in (cost of living).  There's plenty of jobs that will get you over that hump in time.

Welp, right now I am unemployed and working towards my CPA. To me 45k sounds wonderful.

im only doing CPA cuz my parents want me too... personally i think accounting is a very boring and dry career... it sucks so bad ... however, getting a CPA will get you recognized and would help u get a job ... Also in the long run you can make big $$$

Only 1/3 of CPA's are still in accounting five years after passing, so if you hate it now while only studying 20 hours a week in it, you will probably loathe it when working 50-60 hours in it. Accounting is a very high burn out profession, similar to nursing.

It's good that you realize this now, when you get your first job I would consider living as cheaply as you can and save as much as you can to do what you really want to do. In other words, if you live paycheck to paycheck you will be in a career that you hate and will end up being one of those people that are already pi**ed off before they even set foot in the office. By socking away money, when you figure out what you really want to do (own your own business, lots of CPA's are small business owners) you have the money to start off in it.

I wouldn't discourage you from finishing the CPA, as your this far into it. It doesn't hurt one bit to have it on a resume in any capacity you have with a company.

If you are in accounting you should most definitely get the CPA. I still have one part remaining but being 3/4ths of a CPA just recently got me an incredible job that has great pay (a lot more than 45K) and UNBELIEVABLE benefits. They expect me to finish it soon which I will do in July.

If you aren't in accounting then you really need sit down to consider if its worth it but its a definite must do for those already in accounting.

notauser:  Care to provide a link to back up your claim that 1/3 of CPAs aren't in accounting five years after passing?
