And if you stay with Big4, it definitely takes its toll
I met a retired Big4 partner in a non-interview environment and over the
course of a year, it made me realize I don't really want to work there. Now,
if the opportunity came up I wouldn't turn it down... but it'd be horrendous.
Although I know this Big4 partner was a really nice person, very personable
and likeable, other people I knew who worked under her said she was a
relentless boss. But I think thats just the nature of working for Big4.

There is a ton of money to be made in non big 4 firms. Maybe the highest you can make as a partner is 400k as opposed to 1mil a year. Big whoop, man, I would settle for making that much and not working away every waking minute of my 20's with zero job security. They dont treat their employees well and dont give a hoot. I wouldnt recommend going to a local firm because the exit opportunities arent very good, but a mindsized regional firm would work.

unless you like working 7 days a week pushing 10+ hours a day for pretty marginal pay (in comparison to your hours), I wouldn't get to hung up about it. There's more to life than accounting and money.
I work at GT right now and while it's not taking a toll on me, I am pushing over 70 hours a week and my seniors are basically thrown into the meat grinder (100 hours). It's quite ironic really, the company mainly recruits college graduates but the ones who go farther in the company tend to be the older ones who are switching to the accounting profession. (Very few of the college grads stay past senior)
But if you still dream of Big 4, don't sweat it too much, keep working hard and see if you can transfer if you're still enamored with them. Those same opportunities you are seeking are available through the networks of smaller firms too so it's not like the world is crashing down.
And, not trying to sound condescending, but your aspirations are typical of a new graduate. There are TONS of other opportunities within accounting firms and you will see that once you get into the practice. I will be very surprised if your aspirations remain the same, hell mine change on a yearly basis, but just keep an open mind to different opportunities as they come up.

Hi,
So basically, I failed to score an offer with the Big 4 (this was a while ago...I just found this forum), and I'm really wondering what the hell I'm going to do now. I feel like such a failure, and from what I hear, all my career aspirations are virtually gone in one fell swoop. I'm pretty sure that someday, I want to be a controller, but I also potentially have an interest in being a tax consultant and advising companies/individuals on how to minimize taxes/manage their finance/do their books, but is all of this basically gone now that I won't be able to get big 4 experience?
The good news is that my GPA is pretty good, and I've had internships throughout my college career, but I just missed the Big 4/GT/BDO somehow, and now I'm totally lost about what I should do to still reach my goals. Any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks

Everyone here has some good advice. I highly recommend you do some research and educate yourself on the profession. Find out the pros and cons of the small to large firms and go from there. Maybe you didn't get into Big4 because you may not have a Big4 personality. Maybe you will do well in a medium firm. The hiring managers can sense more than you know.
