I spent dozens of hours between Beta Alpha Psi and going to EVERY single recruiting event and I did not get anything.  It was very depressing for a while, but then I started asking around and VERY few people had any internship offers.  Most of those that did had Greek god/goddess physiques and some had connections that I couldn't dream of.

hahaha are you serious Midwest?  god/goddess physiques?  Wow, that is crazyiness.  I went to some of the recruiting events, but really did not like the atmosphere of those things sometimes.  It felt like the people interviewing you or the job recruitment people were so robotic or something.  Robots that spit information out.  Good luck to you man, keep your head up and keep fighting.

I think in the previous posts somewhere we talked about all this and looks, and people were saying that it might apply to women more than men.  I'm a guy so lets hope so,haha

Hi guys! I am a new poster.  I wanted to add, if you are still at your college, try to do as many internships and work as possible before graduating.  Use the on-campus interviews for internships and jobs.  The internships help dramatically when finding a job at one of these firms.

Most people graduated so dont give us this info anymore

Thanks

Here's a link to the top 100 firms.  Breaks it down by regions, too.  I'd imagine that working for any of them wouldn't hurt your career.

To the people debating partner salaries, I really don't care about making MILLIONS of dollars. All I care about is having opportunities to get jobs that I actually want (aka becoming a controller or something) and having a decent salary. To me, even 200k is more money than I could possibly need/want, but I've heard a lot of people say that you never break 80k even at small firms and that your exit opportunities are non-existent, which is why I'm extremely stressed out right now. To me, even 6 figures should be sufficient since I live very frugally (except for nice clothes...I know this sounds vain, but nice clothes are the one thing I'd spend money on even though its a horrible investment) and don't feel the need to buy luxury cars/gigantic homes, etc. but ugh, I just don't know what to do.

Also, aside from Big 4/GT/BDO, what are the next best bets? I've heard Moss Adams is alright, but are there any others? Otherwise, since I want to go private anyway, would it be better to just start out in private at a half decent company and just climb my way up or what?

My personal advice to you is to not start out in private. It's next to impossible for you to transition into public accounting after, let alone Big 4. Also, you can work in a company for your entire life and never make it up to Controller/CFO position, and even if you do it'll take a much longer time. If I were you, I would try to go back to school and get your masters degree in accounting. Not so much because having a masters matters, but because you'll get another shot at recruiting. Almost everyone that gets hired into Big 4 as new associates come from college recruiting. If that isn't an option for you, a mid tier firm would probably be your next bet. One thing to keep in mind when you're considering public accounting is that soft skills is more important than technical skills. Not to say you have a bad personality, but image is important and how you come off during an interview is very critical to getting an offer.

But at the end of the day, don't stress too much. There are plenty of successful people that didn't do Big 4. If you're the type of person that faces adversity head on, I'm sure you'll make it where you want to be.

Oh and no offense to some of the other replies, but if you're going into public accounting, you're going to get crappy pay and crappy hours. It doesn't matter if you're Big 4/Top10/Top100 firms. Busy season is busy season. If a firm isn't pushing  60hrs a week during busy season, there's something wrong with that firm.

There is a ton of money to be made in non big 4 firms.  Maybe the highest you can make as a partner is 400k as opposed to 1mil a year.  Big whoop, man, I would settle for making that much and not working away every waking minute of my 20's with zero job security.  They dont treat their employees well and dont give a hoot.  I wouldnt recommend going to a local firm because the exit opportunities arent very good, but a mindsized regional firm would work.

There is no limit to how much you can make as a partner outside of Big 4.  Depends on how many clients you have.  I had a boss at old regional firm with 4.5 million worth of his own clients, and I can assure you he made more than 400k a year.

Yeah, that why I said "maybe" thats as high as you get.  But I agree with your point, there is a ton of money to be made outside of the big 4.  For some reason, colleges make the big 4 seem the the only opportunity.
