Go to google.com and type in, "Atlanta CPA" or anything other suburb. From there it'll pop up a list at the top, click see more and click on every CPA listed and 85% of the time they'll have a website listed. That's how I got a job with a top 30 firm.

Just going to give you some encouragement since I'm no longer a disparaged and destitute person. I just got a job in the private industry that is better than a public accounting job in pay, hours, and with similar growth potential. Pick a good company that promotes from within and apply for it. Think creatively and don't just go for fortune 500's ;). Also reach out to your family and friends to see if anyone can get you leads, which is what helped me get my new job. |

Any tips for finding those, because its very hard to get solid advice when "big 4/F100 company or bust" is being pounded into your head for 4 years?
Furthermore, does anyone know of good masters programs for accounting majors? In case regional hiring is a big deal, I want to work in Texas/Atlanta/San Diego/Phoenix/Florida (I know, I'm all over the place huh?) and I'm wondering how much not going to a name brand school like UT/Michigan but still a decent state school will hurt me.

You come off as a huge worrier and that will work against you in any interview you get. Do you not think that will kill your confidence and you need confidence when interviewing for jobs. Trust me, I've lost a great multitude of jobs in the past because I wasn't confident in my abilities nor myself.
Just do some research and relax. |

I know, I'm sorry. I'm just worried that because of my damn grades I might have screwed up the rest of my life. Like, my GPA isn't THAT horrendous (I have a 3.4 or so), but its definitely not good enough for the top master of accounting programs or the Big 4. The thing is, I really think that once I start working, I'll do well because I work efficiently and all that, but I don't do that well in school since I don't really enjoy studying if that makes sense. I just hope that eventually people will recognize that I'm a good worker and be able to look past that, but I feel like crap, since everyday professors keep telling me how only the brightest work at the big 4 haha.
but yeah, sorry about that.

My personal advice to you is to not start out in private. It's next to impossible for you to transition into public accounting after, let alone Big 4. Also, you can work in a company for your entire life and never make it up to Controller/CFO position, and even if you do it'll take a much longer time. If I were you, I would try to go back to school and get your masters degree in accounting. Not so much because having a masters matters, but because you'll get another shot at recruiting. Almost everyone that gets hired into Big 4 as new associates come from college recruiting. If that isn't an option for you, a mid tier firm would probably be your next bet. One thing to keep in mind when you're considering public accounting is that soft skills is more important than technical skills. Not to say you have a bad personality, but image is important and how you come off during an interview is very critical to getting an offer.
But at the end of the day, don't stress too much. There are plenty of successful people that didn't do Big 4. If you're the type of person that faces adversity head on, I'm sure you'll make it where you want to be.
Oh and no offense to some of the other replies, but if you're going into public accounting, you're going to get crappy pay and crappy hours. It doesn't matter if you're Big 4/Top10/Top100 firms. Busy season is busy season. If a firm isn't pushing 60hrs a week during busy season, there's something wrong with that firm.

A lot of employers prefer you to have public accounting experience, but in my region it is very hard to even get an INTERVIEW with a lot of public accounting firms. If you can get scholarships to get your MACC then great. However, if you have to pay for it yourself I would really talk to some of the people in the program and see what kind of luck they're having securing employment. I know plenty of people coming out with another $10k or more in debt who thought that a MACC was guaranteed employment who aren't finding anything.

GPA definitely isn't everything from my experience. I had a better GPA than quite a few of those I knew who got offers from the Big 4. They cared more about how you acted. They liked extreme extroverts at my school. We had a social that involved dancing for PWC with Beta Alpha Psi and not one person who didn't dance with them in line dancing got an offer. Although PWC here is more of a cult than a firm, so maybe that's a bad example.
