So basically, its finals week and I really need some advice regarding grades.

I've never been an extremely smart guy. I'm not dumb and I'm definitely smarter than the average college kid, but I have to work my butt off to get good grades (just FYI, in my opinion "good" is 3.8+). Now that it's finals week and I'm basically screwed for my final tomorrow, I'm starting to stress out even more and wondering if all this extra stress I put on myself is really worth it.

Not only am I ruining my health (I can't sleep because I keep dreaming that I won't get into a good firm, I'm constantly stressed out/unable to enjoy college and life in general), but I'm wondering if I'll ever get out of this rat race. If I get the Big 4 job I want, I'll have to deal with a fratty culture (something I abhor about my college), horrendous hours, and the constant stress again as I try to make partner.

I believe part of this problem is that I am friends with a LOT of high achievers (I have 2 friends at Wharton, 1 at Columbia, 2 at Duke, 1 at Stanford, etc. just off the top of my head) and Indian parents that expect me to be as good or better than my friends, but I also put a lot of pressure on my own because I want a good living. However, now, I'm wondering whether chasing MUCH better salary prospects at the Big 4 is really worth being miserable for the rest of my life and how much worse my life would be (at least monetarily) if I opt for the smaller firms. Even if I won't make much money, I feel like I might actually be happier since I'll have (slightly) more time to enjoy whatever money I do make, and I won't have the urge to commit suicide every time I get an A- since they are less competitive and I think that I can get a 3.4-3.5 with minimal effort based on what I've done so far.

So basically, what do you think I should do? Has anyone else ever been in a situation like the one I am/dealt with this kind of stress? Any advice for getting through this?

Oh, and the "urge to commit suicide every time I get an A-" was a hyperbole. I'm not suicidal...just putting that out there.

I used to get -very- stressed out if I made a B in an accounting class.  However, I've found out that although your GPA is important, its usefulness mostly runs out once you sit down in the chair in your interview.  Yea, better grades never hurt, but your personality goes a long way (and your appearance).

I can't give you much advice with the big 4.  I interviewed with 3 of them and failed to secure an offer.  I'm sure every region is different, but the ones at my school's recruiting definitely gave off that "fratty" vibe you referred to.  However, if you don't get on with them it's not the end of the world.  Small firms are probably equally viable to having a happy life.  I'm not sure if you're a citizen or not, but the government might be a good fit for you since you sound like you'd like to be a bit more relaxed.

As for me, I'm starting out with the private industry.  It was honestly the only offer I secured, but in retrospect it really seems like this might have been the best place for me after all.  It has all worked out and all the anxiety and depression that I had for letting myself down (I had high expectations like you have for yourself) has ceased to be.  I am confident you will be in a similar situation soon.

Good luck!

You need to chill out, dude. Your life does not end if you don't get into the Big 4. It is hard when you have parents who put too much pressure on you. My father did the same kind of thing in high school, but I eventually learned to deal with it. Don't let your parents or friends stress you out. Don't compare yourself to them. Do your best and just let the chips fall where they may.
