So now with the economy slowly getting better

LOL

Ha ha! Yeah, someone's been drinking the "Summer of Recovery" koolaid. The economy isn't getting better - the fundamentals have actually been weakening the last 3 months or so.

To the OP, yes. Big 4 experience is still top notch for a career in accounting.

Long-term prospects? Meh, who knows. I've been hearing people predicting their downfall since Enron, but so far they still seem to be there for the meantime. I am under the impression that there is still a need for large firms that can handle large and sophisticated SEC clients that can't be always fulfilled with smaller or mid-sized firms.

As for the economy...Although disappointing , I think people got their hopes up way too quickly with the Govt's stimulus spending propping up a lot of the growth. However, I still think it will grow slowly. I think a lot of us passing the CPA exam are thinking of it as an investment that will eventually pay off when the economy gets better.

what are your alternatives?

do you have offers from a BB investment bank, PE shop, or HF? Do you have a job lined up in an industry your are really passionate about? It really depends.

I would never take a big 4 job over a front office banking/investment job.

If you are deciding between Big 4 and a private accounting job, take the Big 4 job. No question.

It is all relative. A grad from a state school that goes into big 4 audit/tax has done pretty well, while a grad from an ivy/prestigous private school prob should be disappointed.

also, if you want to get paid in life, you better expect long hours and stress. if the job had no stress and easy hours, it wouldnt pay very well.

cant speak about the mid-tiers, but do a search on monster/cfo.com/careerbuilder for accounting/finance jobs and see how many specifically request Big 4 experience.

If you don't think there are a lot more accounting jobs posted now than there were in the past 18 months, you haven't looked hard enough, or you haven't been unemployed long.  It was brutal about 12-18 months ago.  It's just really bad now, which seems good.
