Only around 10%???? Are you sure?

I thought it was a lot more than that. Three of my neighbors are CPAs and they all claimed they passed on their first try. My cousin is a CPA who also claimed he passed all parts on the first attempt. And all of my accounting instructors that I had in college all claimed they passed all parts on the first try.

So, basically, I have not met any CPA that said they failed a section, lol. And notice I used the word "claimed" in my statements above because I'm only going by what those people said. I have not seen any proof that they did indeed pass on the first try. But then again, why would they lie? They passed and that's all that should really matter. So, I'm taking their word for it.

So, since A LOT of CPAs told me they passed on the first try, I was expecting more than 10%. I'm shocked and confused at that percentage.

Mark me down as part of the 10%. Talked to my state board today, and I passed Regulation!

Well, also consider that the probably of "passing everything on the first attempt" is wildly different for the computerized version than for the pencil and paper version.  With the pencil and paper version, you had to take everything at the same time, and you wouldn't keep any credit unless you passed at least two, and if you failed any part, you had to wait 6 months (or something like that) to retake it.  So there was much more pressure on you to pass it the first time, and more of an incentive to.

Now, there's no real prize or incentive really to pass on the first time other than to decrease the amount of time that it takes you to get it.  If you think about it, taking 3 windows, and failing each section at least once is better than taking 4 windows (1 test per) and "passing on the first time."  Taking the exam more often can give you a sense of what it's like, what you need to work on, and increases the odds that you'll get a pass.  Think of each window as an opportunity, with as much penalty for failing as passing up a test.

In addition to "pressure" of passing it the first time, the exams had significantly less content than it does today.  FASB, GASB, and not IFRS are constantly expanding, never really simplifying, the SAS's are getting more complicated, and arguably the reason they split the exam up was because of Sarbanes-Oxley complicating matters, they've merged Business Law and Taxation into one section (Regulation), and they've added an entirely new section (BEC).

Before any old person tries to make you feel bad, just consider that we're taking completely different tests. The two are barely comparable to each other.  The only thing that matters are the 3 letters after your name.
